Dementia Care – Keeping Independent

As we get older, we can all notice problems with our memory, where did we put the TV remote? the car keys? Even what we did yesterday, often stress, tiredness, anxiety even depression can lead to memory problems which can occur at any age, however, forgetfulness can be an early sign of Dementia as we get older.

Dementia is characterised as a group of symptoms, loss of memory, mood changes and confusion caused by damage to the brain. Dementia is progressive, which means the symptoms will gradually get worse. How fast dementia progresses will depend on the individual. Each person is unique and will experience dementia in their own way.

There are several diseases and conditions that cause dementia. These include:

  • Alzheimer’s disease − The most common cause of dementia. During the course of the disease the chemistry and structure of the brain changes, leading to the death of brain cells.
  • Vascular disease − The brain relies on a network of vessels to bring it oxygen-bearing blood. If the oxygen supply to the brain fails, brain cells are likely to die and this can cause the symptoms of vascular dementia. These symptoms can occur either suddenly, following a stroke, or over time through a series of small strokes.
  • Dementia with Lewy bodies − This form of dementia gets its name from tiny spherical structures that develop inside nerve cells. Their presence in the brain leads to the degeneration of brain tissue. Memory, concentration and language skills are affected. This form of dementia shares some characteristics with Parkinson’s disease
  • Fronto-temporal dementia (including Pick’s disease) − In fronto-temporal dementia, damage is usually focused in the front part of the brain. At first, personality and behaviour are more affected than memory.

As challenging as these circumstances may sound, there are lots of people enjoying life who cope very well with Dementia. They continue to have an independent life simply by making some small changes to their home, routines, and with support from family and friends as well as taking advantage of the wide range of Dementia daily living aids available on the market.

Stockport – The Four Heatons

Stockport has a long history of engineering in the early to mid 1900’s it was of cars, aircraft parts and engines, today the engineering industry still exists but more independent precision engineering companies. A form of engineering which was not available in the early 1900’s was the production of stairlifts. It is estimated that the earliest stairlifts where recorded in America in the 1930’s. Today many people reply on the use of manufactured uk stairlifts to enable them to keep their independence.

Top Flight service the Four Heatons which are four affluent suburbs to the northwest of Stockport, bordering the city of Manchester. They are: Heaton Norris, Heaton Moor, Heaton Mersey and Heaton Chapel. All of the Heatons were originally districts of Heaton Norris, the then ecclesiastical centre of the area and lay within the historic County Boundaries of Lancashire. Originally a rural farming district.

The opening of Heaton Norris railway station in 1840 and Heaton Chapel & Heaton Moor railway station in 1853 changed everything. Heaton Moor became a railway suburb. The farmland was sold, and new wide tree lined streets were developed now some of the desirable residences in Stockport. In neighboring Reddish industry was expanding. The Houldsworth Mill opened in 1860, and Reddish’s population increased from 1360 to 8660 within 40 years.

Today Heaton Mersey and Heaton Moor is commuter belt for well to do professionals working in Manchester, it has a fantastic range of Bars, Cafe’s, Pubs and Restaurants.
A little known fact is that Heaton Norris Rovers, now known as Stockport County Football Club was formed in 1883, and used to play on a pitch behind the Nursery Inn on Green Lane. In 1902 they left the Green Lane ground and moved to Edgeley Park.

Heaton Norris, Heaton Mersey, Heaton Moor and Heaton Chapel are on the north bank of the River Mersey, and south of the Cringle Brook, to the west of Reddish and the River Tame. The former Manchester to Buxton roman road the A6 pass through Heaton Norris, as does the London to Manchester railway. This is carried from Heaton Norris to Edgeley by the massive brick built Stockport Viaduct.

Stockport Viaduct

When the wind is blowing in the right direction you can smell the sweet smell not of ‘Robinsons Brewery’, but of the large biscuit works which was opened in 1918.

In 1835 part of the parish was ceded to Stockport and hence Cheshire, Heaton Chapel and Heaton Moor remained in Lancashire, more was transferred in 1894 and the remains transferred in 1913.

Wilmslow & Alderley Edge – A Lovely Place to Retire

For those that know Wilmslow & Alderley Edge, it will not come as a surprise to know that the demographics for the over 60’s is one of the highest in the North West, with the population as a whole living longer and expected by the year 2020 that 17% will reach one hundred. The leafy Cheshire suburb appears to offer if not the elixir of youth, at least the blue print for getting your telegram from the queen!

Wilmslow & Alderley Edge has great facilities with some of the finest designer shops, beauty salons and restaurants to fill your day. However, what if getting around is not as easy as it used to be? What if getting around the house and up and down stairs in one of the many large detached residencies or quaint cottages is a struggle? The lack of bungalows and suitable apartments in the area means that more people will want to stay in their own homes and adapt them.

Surprisingly, when faced with these issues there appears to be a distinct lack of mobility and stair lift companies in the area, however Top Flight Stair lifts Ltd, based only 12 miles away in Middlewich, Cheshire provides a full service to Wilmslow, Alderley Edge, Nether Alderley, Handforth, Chorley, Great Warford, Mottram St Andrew, Prestbury and all surrounding areas.

Our tailored service options mean you can choose how you want to deal with us. Many people like us to visit them in their own home to discuss what options may suit them best, such as a new stair lift from manufactures such as Brooks, Bison Bede, Freelift or MediTek,  Stannah or perhaps a reconditioned second-hand stairlift or rental stairlift, we advise what we believe is the best solution for you, not us. After care is equally important, we have fully qualified engineers who will assist in stairlift breakdown, repairs, services and for extra peace of mind we offer a range of stair lift extended warranties. For those that may want to do research first we have a very comprehensive website at www.topflightstairlifts.co.uk, alternatively our office staff are always happy to help and advise on 0800 093 6117.

But getting around is more than just the stairs, its walking aids, wheelchairs, bath hoists, rise & recline chairs, motorised beds and daily living aids. Top Flight can provide it all at very reasonable prices.

Top Flight Stairlifts also trading as Top Flight Mobility Aids, is committed to keeping people independent in their own homes and why not? We know residents love to live the ‘Cheshire Life’, so here’s a few facts you may or may not know about your area:-

  • Wilmslow is 10 miles due south of Manchester city centre.
  • It is only 3 miles from Manchester Airport.
  • It is in the Cheshire East local authority area.
  • Before the creation of Cheshire East, Wilmslow was in the borough of Macclesfield.
  • Geographically it’s located in the Cheshire Plain.
  • Geologically it’s located in the Cheshire Basin.
  • The town’s population is 30,000 (figure depends upon what you consider is the extent of Wilmslow).
  • Another 8,000 people live in the immediately surrounding area, including Alderley Edge.
  • The population is slowly increasing.
  • Wilmslow is currently noted for the number of TV stars, footballers and so on that live here and in the surrounding area. Famous residents include William Roache, Stuart Hall and, although I’ve not seen any of them in Grove St, Alex Ferguson and Russell Watson.
  • Wilmslow was once the home of Bruce Forsyth’s great grandfather.
  • The most notable person to live in Wilmslow was Alan Turing. He was involved in the development of early computers and their use in code breaking during World War 2. Turing lived on Adlington Road and, indeed, died there when he committed suicide.
  • The town motto is supposedly “Nobis Habitatio Felix” which in English is apparently “A Pleasant Dwelling Place For Us”.
  • The origin of the name “Wilmslow” is uncertain; the most popular theory is that it is named after the burial place of someone called William – possibly William de Bolyn – a “low” being an old name for a burial mound. Some sources say that Wilmslow was originally called “Le Bolyn” because it was near to the river Bollin
  • Until the end of the last century “Wilmslow” was just the area around the church, first recorded around 1300. In 1894 the ancient parishes of Styal, Morley, Fulshaw, Chorley, Hough and Dean Row were officially agglomerated into what you might call “Greater Wilmslow”. Since then it has grown through local government reorganisations to include Alderley Edge and additional small areas.
  • Wilmslow’s population 100 years ago was about 7,000 people. Many years ago Wilmslow was a major centre of Fustian cutting.

    Fustian Cutter

  • Fustian is a type of cloth that is believed to have originated in 2nd Century AD Egypt, at a place called Fustat. All different types of Fustian are constructed or cut in the same manner. A basic woven cloth had extra wefts sewn in as it was made, then the Fustian cutters would take a long sharp knife like instrument and walk the length of the cloth, cutting the extra wefts so that they formed a pile. Velveteen and corduroy were both made this way.
