Can’t Sleep – What can I do to get more sleep?

Did you know? The latest health news from Top Flight Stairlifts explains how more sleep improves your health and happiness.

“Get to Bed early” – seems simple, but we know it’s not always that easy and there is more to it. Read on to find out why…

1. Cut out caffeine

Caffeine can keep you awake. By cutting out your caffeine in take at least four to six hours before bedtime can massively help you fall asleep more easily. Caffeine increaseses the heart rate and thus keeps you more awake because it’s a stimulates the brain and behaviour.

Caffeine before bedtime delays sleep onset, reduces overall sleep time and reduces the depth of sleep. After taking in caffeine sleep is more easily aroused and quality of sleep is reduced.

2. Avoid alcohol as a sleep aid

Alcohol may initially help you fall asleep, but it also causes disturbances in sleep resulting in less restful sleep. An alcoholic drink before bedtime may make it more likely that you will wake up during the night.

3. Relax before bedtime

Stress not only makes you miserable, it wreaks havoc on your sleep. Develop some

kind of pre-sleep ritual to break the connection between all the day’s stress and bedtime. E.g Write a list of tomorrows to do’s, it will close the day so to speak. These rituals can be as short as 10 minutes or as long as an hour. Perhaps try reading something light, meditating on what you’ve read, aromatherapy, light stretching or taking a hot bath can also help you get better sleep. Also, don’t look at the clock! So set the alarm long before bed time.

4. Get some Exercise, do it at the right time for you

Regular exercise can help you get a good night’s sleep. The timing and intensity of exercise seems to play a key role in its effects on sleep. If you are the type of person who gets ener-gised or becomes more alert after exercise, it may be best not to exercise in the evening. Regular exercise in the morning even can help relieve insomnia, according to a study. Ask Top Flight Mobility about Happy Legs (a exercise strategy) – if you are sat down for prolonged periods of time during the day.

5. Keep your bedroom quiet, dark and comfortable

Use earplugs, window blinds or curtains and an electric blanket – everything possible to

create an ideal sleep environment. Ideal room temperatures for sleeping are between 15C and 22C (59F and 71F). Temperatures above 24C (75F) or below about 12C (53F) can disrupt sleep.

6. Eat well, sleep well

Avoid going to bed hungry, but do not eat heavy meals before bedtime. An over-full stomach can keep you up. Certain foods can help, though. Milk contains tryptophan, which is a sleep-promoting substance. Other foods that may help promote sleep include tuna, halibut, arti-chokes advocados, almonds, eggs, peaches, walnuts, apricots, oats, asparagas, buckwheat and bannanas.
