Better Health – Keep yourself Moving

Improve your Health – Keep Yourself Moving

“If exercise were a pill, it would be the most widely prescribed medication in the world”

Exert yourself Gently !

Leading a physically active life can help us feel happier, think more clearly, have more energy, be more productive and, along with proper diet, control our weight.  Exercise need not be painful or extreme to be effective.  Regular periods of moderate exercise several times a week can be very beneficial to your Health.

Jogging, brisk walking, biking and taking part in active sports- enough both to get your heart beating faster and to cause you to warm up, not breaking out into a sweat but taking it gently – can improve your endurance and help prevent heart attacks and strokes.  Combining aerobic exercise with moderate weight (light weights, even if it is filling a bottle with water!) training helps to strengthen your bones, internal muscles, and limbs.  These activities also contribute to maintaining a higher metabolism, which automatically helps to control your weight. Exercise will exert a positive influence on your Health.

Use your feet

Exercise is beneficial for people of all ages, and membership in a gym is not required to get it.  Simply by using your feet instead of a car or a bus is a good start.  Why wait for a ride when you can walk to your destination, perhaps even arriving there faster?

No matter how old you are when you start, you can benefit from moderate physical exercise.  When you are older and have health problems and have not been exercising, it is wise to consult your doctor about how to begin.  But do begin! Exercise that is started gradually and not overdone can help even the oldest amongst us to maintain muscle strength and bone mass.  It can also help seniors to avoid falls.

Protect Your Health

Keep yourself clean

“Hand washing is the single most important thing that you can do to help prevent the spread of infection and to stay healthy and well” reports the U.S. Centre for Disease Control and Prevention.  As many as 80 percent of infections are said to be passed on by unclean hands.  So wash them often throughout the day.  Do so especially before eating, preparing food, or dressing or even touching a wound, and do so after touching an animal, using the toilet or changing a baby’s nappy.

Washing with soap and water is more effective than using alcohol based hand sanitizers.  Children stay healthier when parents train them to wash their hands and to keep them away from their mouth and eyes.  Bathing every day and keeping your clothes and bed linens fresh and clean also contribute to better health.

Keep your home clean

Make whatever extra effort is needed to keep your home clean and tidy, inside and out.  Eliminate any places where water can collect and mosquitoes can breed.  Litter, filth and uncovered foods and rubbish attract insects and vermin, all of which can bring in microbes and cause disease.

Avoid injuring yourself

Obey safety laws when working, riding a bicycle, motorcycle or driving a car.  Make sure your vehicle is safe to drive.  Use appropriate protective equipment and clothing, such as safety glasses, headgear, and footwear, as well as seatbelts and hearing protection.  Avoid excessive sun exposure, which causes cancer and premature aging of the skin.  If you smoke, Stop.  Quitting now will significantly lower your risk of heart disease, lung cancer and stroke.

Depending on your circumstances, there maybe technology or support that is available to help improve your health. In some instances a ‘walker’ can help you to maintain movement and exercise whilst giving you a balancing aid that could prevent falling, if you are unsteady on your feet.

Motivate yourself and your family

Arming yourself with basic health information can equip and help motivate you to make needed adjustments for better personal and family health.

Keep learning

Public and private institutions provide educational programs and literature on a wide range of health topics.  Take advantage of them, and educate yourself about basic ways to improve your health and to avoid endangering it.  Keep an open mind, and be willing to make simple adjustments.

The good habits you learn and put into practise may well benefit your children and their children after them.  When parents set a good example in regards to nutrition, cleanness, sleep habits, exercise and disease prevention their children are likely to benefit.

What more is needed?

It takes more than self-interest to establish and maintain a healthful way of life.  Eliminating long-standing bad habits can be daunting, and making even simple adjustments often requires strong motivation.  Even the threat of serious illness and death may not move some to do what they know is good for them.

Mates need to remain healthy and strong to continue helping each other.  Parents desire to go on supporting and training their children.  Grown children need to care for aging relatives.  Add to this the noble desire to be a blessing to the community rather than a burden.  All this involves love and concern for others.

Don’t give up!

Whatever adjustments you need to make, you may experience more success by starting gradually and not setting unreachable goals for yourself.  For example try cutting down on unhealthy foods, rather than cutting them out.  Try going to bed a little earlier and getting a little more exercise.  Doing something is better than doing nothing.  It normally takes time – weeks or months – before a new good habit becomes second nature.  In the meantime, if you do not see immediate benefits from your extra efforts, do not despair.  If you persist, despite setbacks, your health is likely to improve.

Wilmslow & Alderley Edge – A Lovely Place to Retire

For those that know Wilmslow & Alderley Edge, it will not come as a surprise to know that the demographics for the over 60’s is one of the highest in the North West, with the population as a whole living longer and expected by the year 2020 that 17% will reach one hundred. The leafy Cheshire suburb appears to offer if not the elixir of youth, at least the blue print for getting your telegram from the queen!

Wilmslow & Alderley Edge has great facilities with some of the finest designer shops, beauty salons and restaurants to fill your day. However, what if getting around is not as easy as it used to be? What if getting around the house and up and down stairs in one of the many large detached residencies or quaint cottages is a struggle? The lack of bungalows and suitable apartments in the area means that more people will want to stay in their own homes and adapt them.

Surprisingly, when faced with these issues there appears to be a distinct lack of mobility and stair lift companies in the area, however Top Flight Stair lifts Ltd, based only 12 miles away in Middlewich, Cheshire provides a full service to Wilmslow, Alderley Edge, Nether Alderley, Handforth, Chorley, Great Warford, Mottram St Andrew, Prestbury and all surrounding areas.

Our tailored service options mean you can choose how you want to deal with us. Many people like us to visit them in their own home to discuss what options may suit them best, such as a new stair lift from manufactures such as Brooks, Bison Bede, Freelift or MediTek,  Stannah or perhaps a reconditioned second-hand stairlift or rental stairlift, we advise what we believe is the best solution for you, not us. After care is equally important, we have fully qualified engineers who will assist in stairlift breakdown, repairs, services and for extra peace of mind we offer a range of stair lift extended warranties. For those that may want to do research first we have a very comprehensive website at www.topflightstairlifts.co.uk, alternatively our office staff are always happy to help and advise on 0800 093 6117.

But getting around is more than just the stairs, its walking aids, wheelchairs, bath hoists, rise & recline chairs, motorised beds and daily living aids. Top Flight can provide it all at very reasonable prices.

Top Flight Stairlifts also trading as Top Flight Mobility Aids, is committed to keeping people independent in their own homes and why not? We know residents love to live the ‘Cheshire Life’, so here’s a few facts you may or may not know about your area:-

  • Wilmslow is 10 miles due south of Manchester city centre.
  • It is only 3 miles from Manchester Airport.
  • It is in the Cheshire East local authority area.
  • Before the creation of Cheshire East, Wilmslow was in the borough of Macclesfield.
  • Geographically it’s located in the Cheshire Plain.
  • Geologically it’s located in the Cheshire Basin.
  • The town’s population is 30,000 (figure depends upon what you consider is the extent of Wilmslow).
  • Another 8,000 people live in the immediately surrounding area, including Alderley Edge.
  • The population is slowly increasing.
  • Wilmslow is currently noted for the number of TV stars, footballers and so on that live here and in the surrounding area. Famous residents include William Roache, Stuart Hall and, although I’ve not seen any of them in Grove St, Alex Ferguson and Russell Watson.
  • Wilmslow was once the home of Bruce Forsyth’s great grandfather.
  • The most notable person to live in Wilmslow was Alan Turing. He was involved in the development of early computers and their use in code breaking during World War 2. Turing lived on Adlington Road and, indeed, died there when he committed suicide.
  • The town motto is supposedly “Nobis Habitatio Felix” which in English is apparently “A Pleasant Dwelling Place For Us”.
  • The origin of the name “Wilmslow” is uncertain; the most popular theory is that it is named after the burial place of someone called William – possibly William de Bolyn – a “low” being an old name for a burial mound. Some sources say that Wilmslow was originally called “Le Bolyn” because it was near to the river Bollin
  • Until the end of the last century “Wilmslow” was just the area around the church, first recorded around 1300. In 1894 the ancient parishes of Styal, Morley, Fulshaw, Chorley, Hough and Dean Row were officially agglomerated into what you might call “Greater Wilmslow”. Since then it has grown through local government reorganisations to include Alderley Edge and additional small areas.
  • Wilmslow’s population 100 years ago was about 7,000 people. Many years ago Wilmslow was a major centre of Fustian cutting.

    Fustian Cutter

  • Fustian is a type of cloth that is believed to have originated in 2nd Century AD Egypt, at a place called Fustat. All different types of Fustian are constructed or cut in the same manner. A basic woven cloth had extra wefts sewn in as it was made, then the Fustian cutters would take a long sharp knife like instrument and walk the length of the cloth, cutting the extra wefts so that they formed a pile. Velveteen and corduroy were both made this way.

Origins of the Stairlift

Being newly introduced to this idea of blogging … I have had trouble getting started.. and this being the first question of thought and on the subject of stairlifts, it immediately came to my mind….. who invented the first stairlift?
